JAMES ORENGO: THE DRIVER OF OPPOSITION POLITICS
In modern Kenya, the name James Orengo is synonymous with defiance. This is a man who has defied the odds and braved the storms of one party rule and dictatorship. Orengo remains the only man who challenged and went against President Moi when it was not pleasant to do so. Orengo caused a stir at the burial of his friend and mentor the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga when he told off President Moi to his face. He alleged that Moi was shedding crocodile tears at the funeral of a man he had mistreated when was alive. "Woe unto you hypocrites! Yes, I say again, woe unto you hypocrites, who tortured and detained this great man, and now come here in false praise of his greatness" he remarked. He moved a no-confidence motion against President Moi, blaming his government for the poor state of the economy and a deteriorating security situation.
