JAMES ORENGO: THE DRIVER OF OPPOSITION POLITICS
In modern Kenya, the name James Orengo is synonymous with defiance. This is a man who has defied the odds and braved the storms of one party rule and dictatorship. Orengo remains the only man who challenged and went against President Moi when it was not pleasant to do so.
Orengo caused a stir at the burial of his friend and mentor the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga when he told off President Moi to his face. He alleged that Moi was shedding crocodile tears at the funeral of a man he had mistreated when was alive. "Woe unto you hypocrites! Yes, I say again, woe unto you hypocrites, who tortured and detained this great man, and now come here in false praise of his greatness" he remarked.
He moved a no-confidence motion against President Moi, blaming his government for the poor state of the economy and a deteriorating security situation. He remains a sharp critic of any government that acts illegitimately and against the constitutional requirements.
The “walking constitution” as many call him is a name he has earned because of his firm stand on constitutionalism and justice in the corridors of justice. At one time, President Kibaki said that the constitutional reforms that Kenyans are so worried about are so small and given an opportunity, he would recommend that the document be given to Orengo to ratify and even write a Kenyan constitution.
When the Jubilee government in its first term tried to impose the draconian security laws, he led a battery of opposition lawyers to court to stop the implementation of the law. After the rigged august 2017 elections he was again in court to contest the results and the case they presented merited the nullification of that presidential poll. In Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga’s swearing in as the peoples’ president when “chief justice” MP for Ruaraka T.J. Kajwang’ was charged with treason he went to court on his behalf, a case he is still strongly pursuing.
Nyatieng’ as he is referred to by his followers is loved, adored, and cherished by all who believe in sustainable reforms.
